Speed Limiters Should Be Applied to ALL Large Commercial Vehicles, Not Just New Vehicles
We know that big rigs driven at high rates of speed can be deadly. Because of their size and weight, these vehicles take significantly longer to stop than passenger cars driven at the same speed.
Currently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is proposing that new commercial vehicles with a gross weight of over 26,000 pounds be equipped with speed limiters so that they cannot exceed a speed of 65 mph.
We believe that this new rule should be adopted. However, we further believe that this new rule should apply to ALL vehicles of the stated size, not just to new vehicles.
Road Safe America is encouraging all Americans who are concerned with highway safety to make their voices heard now by commenting on the proposed new federal rule. People may do so by visiting the federal government’s website and commenting on the proposed rule here.
Road Safety America notes that individuals may comment on the rule by undertaking the following steps after going to the government’s site:
- Type in the comment box “THIS RULE SHOULD APPLY TO ALL TRUCKS, NOT JUST NEW TRUCKS”
- Scroll down to the name field and enter your name or “ANONYMOUS”. There is no need to provide any other information.
- Category selection “PUBLIC COMMENT”
- Click “CONTINUE” to the next page and click the box by “I read and understand the statement above.”
- Submit comment.
We would encourage everyone to help keep our roads safe by encouraging the government not only to adopt the proposed rule, but to make it effective to all large commercial vehicles.
