Class Action Lawsuit Filed After Defective Jeep Shifter Causes Death
Star Trek Actor Anton Yelchin was killed after his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled down his driveway and pinned him against his mailbox. Owners of other Jeeps have filed a lawsuit seeking class action status alleging that the gear shifter is defective and that Fiat Chrysler has failed to fix the problem. The lawsuit alleges that Fiat Chrysler failed to fix the issue which can allow vehicles to move when their drivers thought their transmissions were in the “park” position. Because of the shift design, drivers can’t tell by looking whether the vehicle is in the park position and instead have to depend on indicator lights.
Fiat Chrysler issued a “recall” in April and acknowledged that 41 injuries have been alleged as a result of the flaw. Nonetheless, Fiat Chrysler has failed to come up with a fix. “Fiat Chrysler continues to put profits ahead of customer safety,” said Steve Berman, managing partner of Hagens Berman, the firm filing the lawsuit. Fiat Chrysler has initiated a worldwide recall of 1.1 million cars,; vehicles under recall include the 2012 to 2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300, 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
